A difference-in-difference method is applied comparing effects in host countries with effects in countries that applied for hosting the event but were not elected. The results show significant effects of hosting the Olympics on numbers of suicide; during the year of the Olympics host countries are experiencing fewer suicides than applicant countries. Hosting the Olympics may result in greater life-satisfaction among host country citizens. However the effects are reversed after the games where the number of suicides is higher in host countries suggesting a post-Olympic depression. The economical or cyclical effects in host countries are weak proposing low or no significant effects for host countries on the unemployment rate. (Less)
