- Abstract
- The aim of our study was to examine how the staff at community residences handles the residents’ right and ability to make choices and decisions regarding their health, in relation to their disability. We investigated this through semi-structured interviews. Our population consisted of 7 staff members from 4 different community residences, in 3 municipalities in Skåne, Sweden. We constructed an interview-guide to use as support during our interviews. All of the interviews were recorded and transcribed. We then coded the interviews from 4 themes; the individual’s right to choose, paternalism, health and the staffs’ roles. We used theories regarding paternalism, autonomy and empowerment during the analysis of our material. From our... (More)

We used theories regarding paternalism, autonomy and empowerment during the analysis of our material. From our interviews and research we have learned that the interviewed staff members were well aware of the residents’ right to make their own choices. This was also something the staff worked to encourage. On the other hand we have learned that the members of the staff on a regular basis tried to control the residents’ choices by motivating them. All of the interviewed staff members named food combined with physical activity as crucial for the residents’ health and well-being. Therefore there is a dilemma between the residents’ right to decide and the staff members’ responsibility to provide support and care for the residents. This dilemma was exemplified with situations where the residents are not eating properly. Most of the examples we were given regarded overweight residents who suffered both physical and psychological consequences. (Less)
