Abstract (Swedish)
Silver in the form of nanoparticles has increasingly been used as an antibacterial component in consumer products over the last decade. The most common use of nanosilver is in sports clothing. A study has shown that 10-98% of the silver is washed out after 10 washes, which in itself could question the use of the silver. Generally the marketing from companies producing nanosilver products are vague and misguiding to consumers.
The effect on organisms and the fate of the particles are not fully understood. Most of the particles will dissolve to silver ions, which are even more toxic than nanosilver. Almost all of the silver ions will bond with sulfide or chloride, which will reduce the toxicity. The highest concentrations are to be... (More)

The effect on organisms and the fate of the particles are not fully understood. Most of the particles will dissolve to silver ions, which are even more toxic than nanosilver. Almost all of the silver ions will bond with sulfide or chloride, which will reduce the toxicity. The highest concentrations are to be expected in sewage sludge and treated waste water. The risks in the environment are somewhat unclear; no conclusive risk assessment has been conducted. With today’s levels of consumption and silver concentration in products, the environmental risk does not seem to be major. However, a concentration increase in products and a consumption increase would considerably affect the risks. Nanosilver is a very toxic substance to aquatic organisms and regulations of use are utterly recommended, especially since the necessity of the products are low. (Less)
