The purpose of the study was to describe and analyze overweight bloggers' experiences of being overweight. To find the relevant empirical data, a targeted selection was used. The method used for analysis was qualitative content analysis and theoretical starting point was social constructionism and Goffman's theory of stigma. We found that the blog authors experienced that they did not meet the ideals of the society and that they consistently were associated with negative perceptions due to their excess weight. Examples of such perceptions were that they were lazy, unable to control their urges, immoral and undisciplined. It resulted in experiences of stigmatization and discrimination, for example in health care and in the workplace. Moreover, blog authors felt that the society blames them and demands them to change their situation. As a part of creating change, the authors described that it was considered acceptable for the society to stigmatize obese individuals, a phenomenon also described in previous research. The focus in the society was to a large extent directed towards the individual´s own responsibility. (Less)
