Abstract
The aim of this study is to examine how oral contraceptive pills contribute to normative notions about sexuality and how oral contraceptive pills can act liberating and/or limiting for its users. This is examined through qualitative interviews with young adults with experience of using oral contraceptive pills. The interviews were analyzed with queertheory and theories about disciplinary power. The analysis showed that oral contraceptive pills can act liberating for its users in a way that it helps them control their menstruation and reproduction but that it also can act limiting in the way that it’s assumed by partners, parents and professionals working with sexual and reproductive matters that women should act responsible and use it.... Furthermore the analysis showed that oral contraceptive pills contribute to the normalization of the monogamous relationship and in making contraception womens’ responsability and at the same time making men irresponsible. Therefore contraception is associated with protection from unwanted pregnancies, which also acts heteronormative. It was also shown that women were left with an illusion of power, being responsible for using contraception but given little choice in the matter. (Less)
