We conducted semi-structured interviews with therapists, counselors and midwives to gain a deeper insight in the treatment of these women and their experiences of stigmatization. Through this study, we learned that the women feel a lot of shame, guilt, and that they are treated differently in society. We used Goffmans (2009) theory of stigmatization to further understand the thoughts and emotions of these women, the way they are treated in society, and how they are permanently labeled as addicts even if they stop abusing drugs. In order to change the perception of pregnant drug-addicts in society, the authorities working with these women must be better educated on how to effectively deal with these circumstances, and employ a more collaborative approach.
