Abstract
The vagueness of laws concerning social workers labor calls into question legal certainty; we therefore decided to study this matter. The aim of this study was to examine social workers assessments of a vulnerable child`s situation. To answer these questions two vignettes illustrating a vulnerable child’s living conditions were answered, by seven social workers that work with child welfare inquiries in southern Sweden. The empirical data was analyzed by Lipsky’s theory about discretion and previous research relevant for this study. Through the analysis the conclusion was drawn that there are many differences and similarities between social workers assessments of a vulnerable child`s situation. There are also several factors affecting the social works assessments, for example organizational conditions like financial resources and workloads, but also the experiences and attitudes belonging to every social worker.
