Title: A study on staff´s responsibility management and experience of a Swedish LSS home residents loss of a relative
The purpose of this study has been to highlight the experience of responsibility and management when a relative to a person who has lived at one LSS-home dies. Occupants in the LSS-homes are individuals that have different kinds of disabilities and who are entitled by Swedish law to live in homes with special support. How has the staff managed the situation? Which steps have been essential for the staff in such case? Are there any standard guidelines for the staff to follow? What is the scope of perceived responsibility in this situation? In order to answer these questions I have undertaken a qualitative study. The method has been based on five interviews with staff members. The material was analyzed with theories about the modern family and the theory of social ownership.
The results have revealed that the scope of responsibility varied among staff based on different assessments. There were no guidelines to follow and it was seen as a low-priority question in most of the organizations. The family has often delivered the death notification to their relative while the staff offers the support under the procedure. In some cases staff relied on their own experience and common sense to manage this situation. In many Swedish human care organizations the ideal work is based on practicing “the best for the patient/client”. This topic throughout the study has emerged, this is knowing and deciding “the best” for the individual in explaining death. Furthermore it has ensured two inevitable situations: set staff in conflict with the affected families and among staff members. (Less)
