(Less) - Abstract
- Agriculture has an impact on the environment and therefore the ecosystems. It is important that the agriculture is managed in such a way that the impacts on the ecosystems are as small as possible. The processes in the ecosystems give rise to ecosystem services. It is the ecosystem services that give us food, regulates the climate, fuel nutrient cycles and a lot more. A sustainable agriculture should therefore not have a negative influence over ecosystem services.
Agroforestry is an agricultural form that has the opportunity to have a positive effect on ecosystem services. Research on agroforestry in Sweden is relatively new. Agroforestry is an agricultural form that has the opportunity to have a positive effect on ecosystem services. Research on agroforestry in Sweden is relatively new. Today there is an ongoing participatory research project coordinated from Örebro University, Sustainable food production in Sweden – the potential of agroforestry systems. To be able to study agroforestry´s potential to become a sustainable agriculture in Sweden the ecosystem services needs to be researched and evaluated. This work describes the regulating and supporting ecosystem services that has been estimated to be important in Sweden and how to measure them.
The most important regulating and supporting ecosystem services in Sweden are carbon sequestration, biological control, pollination and nitrogen fixation. Beyond that many processes happens below ground that have been identified as important to measure. Carbon sequestration can be measured by carbon accounting and eddy covariance. Biological control and pollination can be evaluated by measuring the biodiversity. Nitrogen fixation can be measured by nitrogen balance and nitrogen difference. In the soil total carbon, nutrients, structure and water are important measuring parameters. (Less)
