Vinterproblematik för spårväg - Förslag på åtgärder i underhåll och projektering baserat på erfarenheter från städer med befintlig spårväg

Abstract
Public transportation gets paralyzed every year when winter conditions occur and the purpose of this thesis has been to summarize experiences from tram cities, mainly in Scandinavia, and suggest solutions to the problems identified. Material was collected from Stockholm, Gothenburg, Norrköping, Oslo, Trondheim, Helsinki and Budapest. Operating the tramway during winter leads to problems specific to the season and the compilation of experience and statistics show that the problems are largely the same for most cities. The areas of concern mentioned most often and in all cities are: • Switches

Operating the tramway during winter leads to problems specific to the season and the compilation of experience and statistics show that the problems are largely the same for most cities. The areas of concern mentioned most often and in all cities are: • Switches
Switches that does not work due to snow and ice that prevents the switch point from moving.
• Snow removal
Snow removal is often mentioned as not working in a satisfying way. A consequence of this is that snowbanks formed in parking lots prevents road vehicles from parking close enough towards the curb and prevents the tram from getting past.
• Overhead line
Frost occurring on the contact line prevents modern trams from gaining power. Cities that are still running with older trams suffer less from this problem. A well-planned maintenance or simple measures during the design can reduce the number of disturbances during the winter season. Proposed measures include: • Using offset switches.
• Sufficient power to heat element in the switch.
• Sufficient free space along the tramway, which provides enough space for snow banks.
• Accurate and clear signage and maintenance of these.
• Alternative solutions for power transmission, eg. a third rail or induced power.
• A good routine for maintenance, planning and communication with all involved.
• Sufficient resources, both in terms of personnel and work vehicles. (Less)
