Abstract
In the today's cold attics are wide problems with mould onset due to the humid climate in the attic. The reason for the mould damage are the thick insulation and absence of the chimney stock that makes the temperature drops in the attic. The mould onset is also due to less ventilation, the attic space is used as a storage room and air leakage through the attic hatch. A solution could be to isolate the outside of the roof to raise the temperature and lower the relative humidity in the attic space. The purpose of this thesis was to study the course of events, from a moisture point of view, after laying insulation externally on the roof. We analyzed a chosen construction for the risk of future mould growth. The goal was to reach an evaluation of mould risk on this roof construction. The approach to evaluate the construction started with tests in the heat and moisture calculation program WUFI. We analyzed the different tests with the chosen parameters. We used Mould Resistance Design Model and Folos mould chart to evaluate the mould risk. These are tools that gave us a hint if the construction is suitable or not. Higher air circulation was better for the construction because it carries away moisture. Insulating the roof lowered the mould risk in northern Sweden but not in the south.
The results showed that the parameters that had the largest effect on the mould risk were the climate and the leakage from driving rain that we assumed penetrated. Our chosen roof construction works well as long as a good waterproofing, to protect against outside leakage, is achieved. This roof construction is more suitable in northern Sweden where the climate differs from the south. (Less)
