Through the concept of discourse we understand how the reality in one domain is constructed through linguistic combinations, where each of the signs receives its meaning in relation to one another . In the following essay I analyze, through Laclau and Mouffe’s discourse theory, how the Sweden Democrats is trying to frame and establish their political discourse on immigration in the Swedish parliament. My material therefore consists of parliamentary debates from the election of 2010 to the spring of 2013. My main conclusions are that the Sweden Democrats is trying to frame and establish their own political discourse by first criticizing the other parties’ discourse and politics on immigration. Through this criticism the Sweden Democrats is trying to establish their own discourse on immigration as a superior option. Regarding how the framing of the discourse on immigration has changed over time, I found some slight differences from the Sweden Democrats early years in the parliament compared with today. The difference is especially apparent in the terms the Swedish Democrats use to describe their own and other parties’ political immigration policies. (Less)
