Abstract
In developing countries less than 50 percent of the population has access to formal financial services. Lack of financial access results in sustained income disparities and lower economic growth. Mobile banking is transforming the financial landscape by providing basic financial services through regular mobile phones. M-PESA and M-Shwari are mobile banking services in Kenya, supplied by the telecom operator Safaricom. Mobile banking is transforming the financial landscape by providing basic financial services through regular mobile phones. M-PESA and M-Shwari are mobile banking services in Kenya, supplied by the telecom operator Safaricom. This study examines mobile banking and its impact on financial access and financial inclusion in the Kenyan banking sector. Information and data from the most recent financial reports on the subject are analyzed. It shows that mobile banking has expanded the variety of products, increased the usage of formal financial services, and improved financial inclusion in Kenya. Mobile banking has also contributed to reduced obstacles and barriers in the financial market and M-Shwari has reduced interest rate differential for low-income individuals. In addition the thesis unravels the advantages and disadvantages of mobile banking and what ought to be prioritized for desired development of mobile financial services in the future. (Less)
