Abstract
This essay is written in collaboration with the Environment Department in Malmö. The essay is a study in how the recycling of waste caused by visitors at major public events works. These events last for a shorter period of time and usually attract large numbers of visitors, thus large amounts of waste are produced during this short period. Previous investigations show that only a few major events in the current situation have implemented a recycling of waste. Three festivals using this system in the current situation were investigated, two in which visitors are free to separate their waste themselves and a third one in which employees themselves sort out the waste caused by the visitors. Three festivals using this system in the current situation were investigated, two in which visitors are free to separate their waste themselves and a third one in which employees themselves sort out the waste caused by the visitors. The essay describes how this works out at these festivals. Results show that this system works out at all three festivals, but the recycling level at the two festivals where the visitors sort out their own waste is still relatively low and could be further improved. Malmö Arena, one of the largest and most modern arenas in Sweden, was also investigated whether it offers this possibility or not. It turned out that in the current situation there is no such recycling of waste possibility. (Less)
