- Abstract
- UNSCR 1325 highlights the importance of studying the relation between identity and international policies, and could be considered an example of how constructions of international policies are made through political representations of different groups. Traditionally in security discourses, women have been portrayed as the most vulnerable group of people in times of armed conflicts. - UNSCR 1325 highlights the importance of studying the relation between identity and international policies, and could be considered an example of how constructions of international policies are made through political representations of different groups. Some feminists argue that this discourse results in the peace-keeping role women are proscribed in post-conflict reconstruction. With a poststructuralist feminist approach, I have concluded that resolution 1325 reconstructs a female security identity based on the historical representation of women within security discourses. The reconstruction of a female security identity in this policy is particularly visible through the relational conception of identity, that is, by reference to something an identity is not considered to be. In the analysis of resolution 1325, this is evidenced by the description of women as a group of vulnerable people in armed conflicts in relation to a call for greater representation of women in political decision-making. Furthermore, the reconstruction of a female security identity illustrates how acceptable knowledge is produced in the resolution. The necessity of problematizing the use of gender categories in international policies is thus demonstrated. (Less)
