Abstract
The latest PISA survey shows that the knowledge of the Swedish students are below average amongst the OECD countries. The development of the Swedish results in the PISA survey is the worst among all OECD countries. Against the backdrop of this development this thesis argues that the situation in the Swedish school is one of the most urgent matters of today. The students’ socioeconomic background is considered to have great explanatory power regarding their performance. But there is also research indicating that the school itself, regardless of the students’ socioeconomic background, has an effect on the students’ performance. These effects are known as school effects or school effectiveness and refer to the school's culture, climate or... (More)

These effects are known as school effects or school effectiveness and refer to the school's culture, climate or organization.
This thesis claims to have found support of these school effects and can show that the pedagogical and social climate of the school actually has some impact on the students’ performance. To study the relation I use the statistical method regression analysis based on data for 73 randomly selected primary schools in Sweden. To isolate the link between the school climate and the students’ performance I use the control variables students socioeconomic background, teacher ratio and teacher competence. (Less)
