- The media has often been considered to have an important role in a democratic society as a channel for political communication and public information. Journalism’s primary roles are to inform citizens, make accountable those in power and allow different opinions to be heard. At a local level it is the local newspapers that fulfil this function. Media companies are however generally for-profit companies, which can make the situation complex.
Studies in the past have shown the media have tended to focus their coverage on cities, to the detriment of smaller communities. The research also revealed only a small portion of the total coverage was devoted to reviewing the municipal administration and political system.

The purpose of this study was to examine how residents in different locations obtained information about their society through media and to what extent the media was reviewing the municipal. The study was based on a quantitative content analysis of articles covering twelve municipalities in Scania during a month. The result showed the coverage varied greatly between municipalities, both in terms of quantity and to which extent the coverage was scrutinizing. (Less)
