- Abstract
- In this paper I am studying the orchestral work Lontano (1967) by György Ligeti (1923-2006) and its use in the films The Shining (1980), by Stanley Kubrick, and Shutter Island (2010), by Martin Scorsese. The purpose has been to apply an unusual perspective on film music, based on one selected musical work and how it is used in moving images, instead of the more common method where the entire soundtrack of one specific movie is studied. My aim, having this perspective, is to show how the films affect the creation of musical meaning. I am presenting a brief analysis of Lontano, with verbal interpretation of the piece, in order to thoroughly examine the use of the music in the two films. I point out various similarities and differences in how... (More)

I am presenting a brief analysis of Lontano, with verbal interpretation of the piece, in order to thoroughly examine the use of the music in the two films. I point out various similarities and differences in how the music has been utilized, and in conclusion I show that there is indeed a vast exchange of meaning between the musical work and the films. I also connect my work to those of several well-known theorists; some specialized in film music and some in the musicological field of hermeneutics in general. (Less)
