- Abstract
- The aim of this study was to investigate the professional’s point of view in their work with people who have mental retardation and are expecting a child. To perform this study we used a qualitative method. The study was performed by interviewing six professionals from three different organizations. We made an interview guide, in which the questions were about their previous experience, parent ability, first contact, their work process, which support they offer and collaboration with other organizations. The theory used in this study is the normalizationprinciple, based on Bengt Nirje’s theory. We discovered that it is unusual for a person with a mental retardation to become pregnant, but all the professionals had experience in this area.... (More)

The theory used in this study is the normalizationprinciple, based on Bengt Nirje’s theory. We discovered that it is unusual for a person with a mental retardation to become pregnant, but all the professionals had experience in this area. Most of them didn’t offer much support during pregnancy, but the professionals offered help after the baby was born. During the pregnancy the social workers could start an investigation and prepare if support is needed for the parents. The midwives helped the parents-to-be to prepare by giving them practical training and helping them through the pregnancy. All the professionals thought it was important to collaborate with other organizations. (Less)
