Abstract
This essay investigates how Malmö Central Station can be understood in relation to the con-cept of liminality, how it is part of a social and architectural transition between everyday life, in a city, and a travelling state. The concept of liminality is based on Victor W. Turner’s an-thropological theory of transition rites. The essay also investigates how modernity in general and the railway in particular changed the perception of places and limits. The discussion on this theme is based on the writings of Beatriz Colomina and Wolfgang Schivelbusch.
The major method of investigation is a description of two strolls from outside the building to the train platforms, one in 1925 and the other today (2013). These strolls are thereafter... (More)

The major method of investigation is a description of two strolls from outside the building to the train platforms, one in 1925 and the other today (2013). These strolls are thereafter com-pared and the treatment of the historical parts of the station in the contemporary building is described.
Based on the investigation the essay concludes that the concept of liminality can be incorpo-rated in the understanding of the station in both times. It further discusses how the transition into travelling is more fluent in today’s building and how travelling is a less dramatic part of contemporary life in a city, but that esthetic ideals of railway architecture romantically refers to historical travelling.
