- Abstract
- This thesis examines the possibility of a connection between perceived European identity in the member states, and turnout in the 2009 European parliament. Through identifying what constitutes a European identity and then applying this definition to a survey regarding geographical identity by the EVS and the 2009 election turnout.
Due to lack of significance no correlation could be found between European identity and election turnout, and thus the two countries selected have been exanimated in a qualitative “most-different-design” study. Ireland: that have a high turnout and a low European identity, and Finland: that have a low turnout, high European identity, whom have the biggest difference in results, both connecting to the... As a conclusion, no connection between European identity and election turnout have been established in the qualitative study. Mainly linking back to a lack of connection between the EU and European identity. However, identity in the two states is largely defined by the young age of the state, and that a voter with high regards towards the EU is more likely to vote. (Less)
