- The culture proposal "Time for culture" emphasizes that the financial responsibility should not only be dependent on public funding, but private funders and non profit agencies should also take increased financial responsibility. The increasing demand for financial independency, has created a new position for cultural institutions. - The culture proposal "Time for culture" emphasizes that the financial responsibility should not only be dependent on public funding, but private funders and non profit agencies should also take increased financial responsibility. The increasing demand for financial independency, has created a new position for cultural institutions. This has led to this study that wants to find out how the museum sector relates to public, and non- public funding. The thesis is an attempt at a quantitative understanding of the phenomenon. Surveys were the chosen technique used to collect material. Several respondents made comments to clarify responses and this gives an understanding of why the respondents think in a certain way. This means that the paper has both quantitative and qualitative findings. The study has been limited to regional and municipal museums in Sweden. 86 museums are selected and of these 56 responded answered which is 65 percent.
Of the total number of museums in the survey, 62 percent received income from non- public funds in 2013. The strong majority of the museums (81 percent) perceive that their activities are highly or fairly dependent on political decisions . The results in this paper show that 75 percent perceive the impact of policy decisions on the museum as something positive, since it is an objective that is decided in a democratic process. Museums have a cultural mission and play a role in society and it is therefore important that they be linked to democratic processes. A significant number of the museums are more positive about financing from public funds than non- public funds. An increasing self-financing should get consequences for the museums for example sensitivy to movement in economy. (Less)
