Abstract
Abstract Today large amounts of macadam are being delivered for the production of asphalt. One of the requirements of the material that´s being used is the adhesion. The adhesion is essential for the performance of the coating. It minimizes the risk of stone chips and makes the construction of the pavement stronger etc. Several studies have been made using the Roller bottle method. The results show that it is not enough to produce asphalt by only using bitumen and macadam, an adhesive is also required. Some of the adhesive materials that are considered to be the most suitable for the manufacture today are lime, cement and Wetfix I. The roller bottle method basically means that homogenous aggregate is being mixed with bitumen. In this study, adhesive will be in the mix to see if the results are affected in either a positive or a negative way. When the stones have been covered with bitumen and the adhesive they will be stored overnight at room temperature, then they will be placed in specially designed glass bottles filled with distilled water. The bottles will then be rolled on a roller table and will be evaluated regarding the stone coverage during different times. Three different adhesives will be evaluated in this study and aggregates from two different locations will be used. The aim of the study is to examine the adherence of various binders. The study will also examine, but only thoroughly, if the adherence varies depending on the aggregates qualities of the stones. The method involves taking photographs of the aggregate with and without adhesive materials at the different times of evaluation. On each occasion, several images will be taken of the aggregate. The images will be named for each material and occasion for easy identification of the images in the image editing software. The software is developed in Matlab environment, which is a commercially available computing language. The system for estimating the coverage of the bitumen consists of multiple steps. These steps are mentions below item 2.7.2 Steg för steg bildanalys. The results of the survey show that none of the evaluated adhesives yielded any positive results. For an adhesive to be useful it requires the coverage to be at least 70 % at the last check. The adhesive that were used showed different results depending on what aggregate was being covered. Keywords: Ocular assessment, adhesion, image analysis and coverage. (Less)
