Abstract (Swedish)
The general purpose of this thesis is to investigate how HTML5 and related technologies can be utilised to improve the usability and user experience of the web GUI of Axis network cameras. HTML5 is often used as a label for a family of new web technologies, including CSS3 and JavaScript APIs. Of special interest is the new video element which can potentially change the way video is displayed in the web GUI. The focus of the project has not exclusively been on technology since there are other important factors behind a successful web GUI. Therefore, the principles of UCD have been used to create a proposal for a web GUI that is based on what the target users desire and not only what modern web technologies have to offer.

The project consisted of several phases. The first phase was to study literature relevant to HTML5 and UCD. The work then shifted focus towards gathering information about the target users, mainly by conducting internal interviews. Based on the target users, several horizontal lo-fi prototypes were created and evaluated. Using the findings from the lo-fi prototypes as a blueprint, the next phase was to develop a vertical hi-fi prototype. The development phase was highly iterative: for each feature technical investigations followed by internal detailed design discussions were performed. The project was finalised with assessment tests of the hi-fi prototype. These tests were performed by potential users.

The conclusions drawn from the studies and evaluations showed that several HTML5 features are still not mature enough to be used in a commercial web GUI, without extensive fallback functionality. Even though the video element received a lot of attention during the project, no feasible way to incorporate it in the current Axis network cameras were found. However, there is a constant evolution of the technology that should be monitored. Lastly, the hi-fi prototype received positive feedback from the test participants and can act as a source of inspiration for future work at Axis. (Less)
