Abstract
This report is dealing with the question whether or not it’s possible to choose components, for an automated system, in a way that allows the system itself to act as flawless as possible and to be able to inform the operator when service is due and therefore minimize the overall downtime of the system. It was soon established that this cannot be done simply by choosing components but has to be done by an accurate construction of the logic control system. Instead this report was concentrated around the choosing of reliable components and the whole matter of error-management is completely put aside.

The facility descried in this report is meant to mold metal sheets to be used as parts of fuel tanks for trucks. It’s going to be managed by a controlling system based on PLC-technique and is manned by a two-person crew.
Focus when choosing components for the different functions of the facility has been on realization of drives for conveyors and detection of the position of goods.
To make substantiated choices, information about manufacturers and prices of different products has been gathered and evaluated.
At last it has been established that to make this facility act as flawless as possible and with a certain amount of self-diagnostics an investment in development and programming of the controlling system is necessary. Keywords: Choosing components, automation, sensors (Less)
