Abstract
Abstract

In Sweden many older closed municipal landfills lack current safety measures such as bottom liners and contain hazardous materials that are today strictly regulated or banned. Emissions from these pose a threat to health and environment now and in the future, having the potential to contaminate soil, groundwater, surface water and air. Risk for exposure is often increased due to poor documentation and changed land use. The aim of this bachelor’s thesis was to do a preliminary survey and risk classification according to the Swedish EPA’s current standard, Method for Inventories of Contaminated Sites (MIFO), of three older landfills in Sjöbo municipality located in the south of Sweden.

In the preliminary survey no tests are taken and results were based on existing records, interviews, maps, aerial photos and a site visit. Risk was evaluated according to estimated hazard, contamination level, potential for migration, health sensitivity and environmental protection. The survey revealed that all three landfills contain older household wastes as well as varying degrees of local industrial and demolition/construction waste which increases the likelihood of highly hazardous substances such as heavy metals, ammonium, aromatic hydrocarbons, chlorinated organic compounds, arsenic and PCB. Incineration of waste was carried out at two of the three landfills, increasing the risk for hazardous pollutants such as dioxins and PAH. Potential for migration in soil and groundwater was deemed large to very large at all three landfills posing a threat to drinking water aquifers and environmentally protected areas in the vicinity. All three landfills should be investigated further in a preliminary site investigation, which quantitatively determines contamination level and migration location and potential. (Less)
