The aim of this study is to understand the practice of social work focused on young

purpose of this paper is to describe and analyze how categorization within the social
services affects the choices and actions made by social workers throughout the
clients’ process towards self-sufficiency. The empirical data the study relies upon
consists of six semi-structured interviews performed on social workers in three
different municipalities in Sweden. The analytical tools used to illustrate the
categorization process were Yeheskel Hasenfeld’s theory of human service
organizations and Charles Tilly’s theory of durable inequality. The study shows that
the work performed by the social workers is affected both by the characteristics in the
different stages along the client process, as well as the structure within the
organization that sets the framework for the categorization of clients. We found that
clients are divided into different categories in relation to how near or far from the
labor market they stand, which determines what services they are offered.
Furthermore, the study suggests that the categories created within the organization are
dependent on the criteria formulated by the external actors that provide work-related
actions in cooperation with the social services. (Less)
