- Abstract
- This paper examines nurses’ and assistant nurses’ possibilities for and conditions of resistance with specific attention to interrelated processes of gender and work organisation in the context of Region Skåne. The paper maps the ways in which nurses’ and assistant nurses’ spaces for resistance are circumscribed by interpellations of normative femininity, density of work, institutional mechanisms of control, internal and self discipline and the seaming impermeability of the hospital organisations to threat from the shopfloor. The paper contends that the hospital organisations reproduce nursing as a calling by with varying degrees of coercion calling on nurses and assistant nurses to compensate for the discrepancy between resources and... The paper contends that the hospital organisations reproduce nursing as a calling by with varying degrees of coercion calling on nurses and assistant nurses to compensate for the discrepancy between resources and patient needs by working overtime, dubbel shifts and extra days. Nurses and assistant nurses are shown to employ two main and somewhat conflicting strategies of resistance which furthermore support or fail to challenge cutbacks and heightened levels of exploitation. Finally, it is argued that these conflicting and contradictory strategies of resistance can be consolidated and escape escalating (self-)exploitation and cutbacks through the politicization of caring.
