Abstract
In this thesis three methods to predict smoke spread thorough small ventilation openings for the CFD field model FDS 5 are evaluated. The methods have been applied to several experiments where smoke spread in to the attic through ventilation openings in the eave have been studied.
The obtained result shows that the applied methods are not adequate for heat release rates less than 140 kW. The required cell size for lower heat release rates are currently not practically possible to apply with the available resources for a general FDS user. The computational
meshes applied in the zone from the fire source to the ventilation opening need to obtain the required cell size for the model to generate reliable results. According to the obtained... (More)

According to the obtained result one of the three methods, named homogeneous cell size, are considered the most reliable, it is also adequate for lower heat release rates than the method called multiple mesh size. The obtained results show that the third method, called the leakage method, underestimates the amount of smoke spread through the eave into the attic. Therefore this method is not applicable for modeling of smoke spread through small openings. (Less)
