Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine how women in a social science faculty at a university in Sweden perceive their career possibilities. Given that the Faculty of Social Sciences is one of those predicted to be the first to come under the so-called equality interval, the opportunity structure for women's career development is interpreted as good. In the study, seven semi-structured interviews were conducted with women during postgraduate or postdoctoral teachers at the institution. The results were analyzed with Hirdman's (2001) gender system and stresses to two main tracks in women's view of their own career development in academia. On the one hand, there are those who accept and adapt to the vision of career of academia, which is what the gender statistics interpret as positive. On the other hand, there are those who do not want to go into what they call the academic "career incitement" and develop their career at their own pace and direction, which gender statistics can interpreted as "leakage" or "inexplicably slow career". The results also show three themes, which can provide both obstacles and opportunities for careers in academia: working climate, transparency and time. To create an understanding of these differences and the academic context for university teachers, a thorough review of the literature on university and career patterns from a gender perspective is presented.
