Abstract
Something that will often occur in group work is that group members do less work than they should; a phenomenon called social loafing. The purpose of this paper is to examine attitudes to a social loafer, and if those attitudes changes depending on which explanation is given, and also if there is a connection between the attitudes and personality and degree of need for cognition. The method that was used was a survey in which 82 students at Lund University participated. In the survey there was a scenario in two parts. The scenario described a situation of social loafing, and the second part was in two versions, one with a legitimate explanation and one with a non-legitimate explanation. After the scenario there were statements and... (More)

After the scenario there were statements and questions, last in the survey there were tests that measured personal traits. The result showed that the participants had negative attitudes against the social loafer in the scenario. The social loafer was faced with even more negative attitudes when there was a non-legitimate explanation. A legitimate explanation led to less negative attitudes among the participants, this was in line with the hypothesis. There was no significant correlation between need for cognition and the participants’ attitudes to the social loafer. Participants with a high level of conscientiousness had more negative attitudes towards the social loafer after the first part of the scenario. (Less)
Abstract (Swedish)
(More)

(Less)
