Abstract
This study examines how singing can be used as a language development method in second language acquisition for immigrants in Sweden. The aim is to investigate whether there are advantages of using singing when teaching pronunciation to second language students, and how students experience education where music is integrated. Our research questions are: What effect has singing on students’ pronunciation? How do the students experience education where singing is included?

Our study is based on an educational project, which lasted one week with a class studying 'Swedish for immigrants', and where singing was used as a tool in the second language studies. The educational project ended with a concert. The documentation of our study... (More)
This study examines how singing can be used as a language development method in second language acquisition for immigrants in Sweden.

The documentation of our study consists of transcriptions from two focus group interviews, one, which was performed at the beginning of the study, and one after the concert. We also did an interview with one of the student’s regular teachers, and with Eva Bornemark, a music teacher in Sweden who uses singing as a tool to teach immigrants Swedish. Our own experiences and reflections during the educational project were documented with the help of the portfolio method.

The results of our study include excerpts from the interview transcripts that were conducted with the students, their regular Swedish teacher and with Eva Bornemark. The result also includes our own experiences and reflections.

In the end of this study we answer our research questions. First we discuss the student's pronunciation development during the teaching project. Then we reflect on how the students experienced teaching with singing, and what other effects the teaching provided. (Less)
Abstract (Swedish)

(More)

(Less)
