- Abstract
- A company is developing a new product for transporting temperature-sensitive liquids long distances. The new device will have an active cooling unit with very precise temperature regulation. This will increase the transportation time compared to conventional methods.
This report will only concern the structural parts of the product, since development of the temperature control system has been done earlier. Mainly the process of concept generation and the method of choosing a concept for the final product will be presented. Relevant materials and manufacturing processes will be presented to make it easier for the reader to follow.

Since one of the main demand is for the box to be easily transported (carried) by one person, the main objective during the design process has been to maintain a low weight while all the essential functions can be implemented in a good way. The initial target weight was 20 kg. That goal was not achieved since it would affect the dependability and cost too negatively. The final weight was just below 25 kg.
Many concepts were generated, and most of the realistic ones included composite material because of their outstanding mechanical properties. Though, after further investigation and design work, it was decided that the composite solutions were too expensive and time consuming to be a good choice.
Instead the final design consists of a 3D-printed main structure. This part contains the fluids and is designed as a sandwich construction consisting of an inner and an outer layer. The space between them is filled with foam for enhanced strength and insulation. The compressor and the rest of the electrical components are placed outside of the insulated structure since they generate heat. They are covered by a panel to separate them from the user. The lid is made out of two vacuum formed halves that are adhesively bonded together. The space between them is then filled with foam, acting as insulation. To monitor the temperature these is a screen mounted on an adjustable arm. In a lowered position the screen lies on the top of the lid. (Less)
