- Abstract
- This master’s dissertation comprises a life cycle assessment (LCA) of a changing table, which
mainly constitutes of FSC certified wood. Results per functional unit showed global warming
potential of 12,5 kg CO2 eq, creation of ground level ozone 2,17 g C2H4 eq, emitting of acidifying
substances 39,4 g SO2 eq and energy consumption 93,5 MJ during the estimated product life length
of 12,5 years. The activity transports has the largest contributions in all impact categories.
Biodiversity impacts were not assessed in the LCA, mainly due to lack of commonly accepted
methods. In the light of this, a literature study of biodiversity in LCA is performed and a method
for quantification of biodiversity in LCA is proposed.

Biodiversity impacts were not assessed in the LCA, mainly due to lack of commonly accepted
methods. In the light of this, a literature study of biodiversity in LCA is performed and a method
for quantification of biodiversity in LCA is proposed.
By quantifying quality changes of ecosystem services for land use over time through inventory
data of vascular plants impacts on biodiversity in LCA might be assessed. Quality changes for land
use, though, need to be compared with reference data in order to be able to assess the impacts on
biodiversity in an applicable approach. A different approach to assess impact on biodiversity in
LCA is suggested in this essay. This approach is based on quantifying impacts by calculating
biodiversity promoting actions into equivalents for biodiversity.
For quantifying impacts on biodiversity in LCA, however, comprehensive local and regional
inventories plus a unified choice of method is necessary. Since LCA and FSC both are tools for
monitoring environmental impact it is perhaps preferable to regard them as complementary at
present. (Less) - Popular Abstract
