Abstract
This feminist research thesis focuses on Swedish women’s narratives about their own safety and vulnerability in public spaces. Earlier research, and also many feminist theories, claims that people are seeing women as victims and has an idea that women are in constant need of protection. The aim of the thesis is to make women’s personal standpoints about their lives visible. I used feminist security theories and gender theories to back up my findings, and narrative analyses to analyze the interviews. I did seven individual interviews with women of different backgrounds. The aim of the thesis is to make women’s personal standpoints about their lives visible. I used feminist security theories and gender theories to back up my findings, and narrative analyses to analyze the interviews. I did seven individual interviews with women of different backgrounds. Through the interviews I found common narratives who showed that violence against feminine bodies in public spaces has become normalized, and that the women use a lot of different strategies to survive in their every day lives. But, despite this they had a strong belief that they didn’t want to be seen as vulnerable victims. For example, no one had used a weapon for protection, though it was common that family members bought weapons, as pepper spray, for them or suggested that they would get one, which confirms the idea of women in need of protection. My conclusive thoughts are that the safety discourse affects women in ways that both goes opposite and in line with the earlier research and theories about feminine vulnerability, and a fear is that they in some ways reproduce the feminine stigma.
