- Abstract
- This report presents the work developing a
modular sailboat interior system that offers an
easy and affordable way for recreational sailors to
customize the interiors of their sailboats according
to their different and changing needs.
Cruising sailboats are like floating houses or
cottages, with the difference that the interior is
permanent. They have a long product life and
often last for decades. Many of the boats sold today
will still be sailing in the 2060’s, but designed for
the needs of today.
Due to the long product life of a sailboat, one
boat can often have many different owners.

use of the boat and perhaps makes sailing less
attractive to potential sailors.
This modular interior system makes it possible
for the owner to adjust the living space on-board
to fit their needs. It also provides a possibility, for
a long time owner, to adapt the interior design as
the needs and requirements change through life.
During the research phase I studied other areas
such as transportation and compact living for
inspiration. Through interviews with sailors,
visits to trade shows and sailing trips I gathered
more information. I also constructed a mock-up
of a section of a boat in full scale to test and better
understand the proportions and use of the system.
The system consists of an interface integrated
with the hull, fastening solutions and a variety
of interior modules for different functions and
uses. The interior system is a proof of concept
and presented in a generic 9 meter long (30 feet)
cruising sailboat. The modules in this project
include furniture and storage but the design
concept is meant to be further developed and
include modules for all situations.
The concept would allow boat manufacturers
to offer more variable line-ups and improve
the variety and flexibility for boat owners. The
modules would be available both from the
manufacturers and third party suppliers. (Less)
