- Abstract (Swedish)
- This bachelor’s thesis has focuses on the internal hierarchies of gender within the gay, male, community. Based on interviews with young gay men in Sweden, I explore the way that we (for I situate myself in the studied field) feel, experience and relate to concepts of masculinity, femininity and desire. From this I conclude that the position of negotiation with hegemonic masculinity is one of precariousness. To perform the hegemonic is to restrain and shed parts of one’s subject and feeling of self, but to embrace the effeminate “gayness” is also perilous for it questions the order of normative gender and it means a loss of gender-based power in a patriarchal society – and also the sense of being male/manly. A second point of my conclusions is that desire is based on a dichotomous and heterocentric understanding of desire. Sexual acts, and the gendered connotations thereof, are based on a discourse of idealised heterosexuality. While “bottoms” are denoted as effeminate, both socially and morphologically, their masculine counterparts, “tops”, own a symbolic capital of heterosexualised and “true” masculinity.
I draw on Judith Butlers’ queer theory, a gendered understanding on Pierre Bourdieus capital theory, and R.W. Connells theorisation of masculinity. (Less)
