Stigmatisering av psykiskt sjuka: Hur allmänheten uppfattar deprimerade brottsoffers trovärdighet

- Abstract (Swedish)
(More)

(Less)
- Abstract
- Stigmatization of mental illness leads to discrimination of and an impaired quality of life for these individuals. In general, people misrepresent individuals suffering from mental illness, the emergence, symptoms and effective treatment. Frequently, these individuals are misinterpreted as being dangerous or responsible for their own medical state and they are to a greater extent avoided by the public compared to mentally healthy individuals. People suffering from mental illness is subject to a greater risk of being exposed to crime than to commit crimes themselves, while at the same time they have a more accurate depiction of reality compared to mentally healthy witnesses. Nevertheless, stigmatization of victims with a mental illness can... (More)

People suffering from mental illness is subject to a greater risk of being exposed to crime than to commit crimes themselves, while at the same time they have a more accurate depiction of reality compared to mentally healthy witnesses. Nevertheless, stigmatization of victims with a mental illness can affect and result in a misrepresentation of their credibility. Therefore, the aim of this study was to closely examine how stigmatization affect victims suffering from depression and how this affect their credibility. Furthermore, this study intended to see if there is a correlation between the credibility of depressive victims and the onlooker’s knowledge of depression. The method used to carry out these investigations was a questionnaire with an independent groups design. To measure the credibility of the victim’s the Witness Credibility Scale was used. Students of Lund University were used as a population to investigate this study. The control and experiment group consisted of 42 and 44 subjects respectively. Results showed a weakly positive correlation between assessment of credibility and knowledge about depression. However, no other statistically significant results were found and thus, no further conclusions could be drawn. (Less)
