(Less)

Purpose: The purpose of the thesis is to study and draw conclusions regarding the relationship between control, trust and goal congruence in franchise collaborations. To contribute with a clearer picture regarding our problematization, we are studying the concepts on a more specified level than what previous researchers have done. We hope to contribute with conclusions that could support and help franchisors with strategic decisions in the future.

Methodology: Based on an abductive research approach and with the usage of semi-structured interviews a qualitative study has been conducted. The companies that has been interviewed has been divided into three groups after which the similarities and differences within and between the groups has been analyzed through encoding.

Theoretical perspectives: The teoretical framework in the thesis consist of existing theories regarding output control, behavior control, competence trust, goodwill trust and goal congruence.

Empirical foundation: The empirical material is based on eight semi-structured interviews. All respondents are franchisors operating on the Swedish market. Based on the theoretical framework we have divided the empirical foundation to five parts after which each company has been presented within their respective group.

Conclusions: Through reconnecting to the purpose and tentative conclusions we have found a link that previously has not been established, that trust influence control rather than the contrary. The use of output control has shown to be positive for goal congruence while the use of behavior control has shown to have a negative effect. Further we draw the conclusion that the link between the three head concepts, control, trust and goal congruence creates a bigger and more important process. The process, partly consisting of goal setting, touches the ongoing relationship between the franchisor and the franchisees through which trust and goal congruence collaterally improve. (Less)
