Abstract
This study aimed to investigate parents’ attitudes towards pedophilia, i.e. their knowledge about pedophilia, stigma of pedophiles and how the society should react to child sexual abuse. Twenty
participants were conducted into the survey to answer questions.

Parents shared couple common misconceptions about pedophilia, for instance that pedophilia is the same as child sexual abuse. Despite of few misconceptions the most of parents had a good knowledge about pedophilia and child sexual abuse. The study revealed that parents’ attitudes against pedophiles and child molesters were negative and that pedophiles elicited fear in participants. Parents shared couple common misconceptions about pedophilia, for instance that pedophilia is the same as child sexual abuse. Despite of few misconceptions the most of parents had a good knowledge about pedophilia and child sexual abuse. According to 25 % of responders, rehabilitation is to be the most important part in punishing of pedophiles. Rehabilitation and reintegration of pedophiles provide resources to a normal Life that prevents social isolations. Unfortunately, the current research indicated that treatment for pedophilia has been giving varying results.

According to the majority of the respondents (55 %), crime prevention is to be one of the most important action to be one of the most importance. They also thought that the current crime prevention methods and punishments are not sufficient. Sixty-five percent of parents also wanted to establish a sexual crime register into Sweden with an intention to prevent future crimes and 55 procent thought that pedophiles should have harder punishments.

These results also indicate that pedophiles are a stigmatized group. The stigma can result in discrimination and social isolation. To protect children we need to concentrate on preventive work by helping pedophilesto come forward and seeking professional help. (Less)
