- Abstract
- The aim of the study was to examine parents’ experiences of personal assistance of their child's personal assistance in the home. The focus set on the relationship to the assistant. The material has been gathered through semi-structured interviews and the sample group consisted of four parents. The approach is ethno methodological. Furthermore, the concepts of backstage and frontstage from Goffman´s dramaturgical approach have been used as theoretical premises. Other concepts that have been used to understand the material are closeness and distance. A complex picture appears from the results as experiences differ in many aspects as well as how parents manage life with assistance. The fact that the home is the workplace is a crucial aspect. This seems to create mixed feelings as to whether the relation to the assistant should be charactarised by closeness and informal interactions or distance and formality. A conclusion is thus that more research needs to be conducted in the field. Also education, alternatively supervision to the parents as managers, is proposed. (Less)
