- Abstract
- The aim of this study was to examine how people with mental illness, their families and social workers talk about the contact between client and social workers to gain a deeper understanding of how relationships are created. The study was conducted through semi-structured interviews with six people who represent the people mentioned above. The interviews were then processed and analyzed with critical discourse analysis and discourse psychology. Conclusions that the study has resulted in is that some clients experience a worsening attitude, they want a personal and individual approach, and derives it to social services are in a vulnerable and stressful situation in today's society. - The aim of this study was to examine how people with mental illness, their families and social workers talk about the contact between client and social workers to gain a deeper understanding of how relationships are created. The study was conducted through semi-structured interviews with six people who represent the people mentioned above. The interviews were then processed and analyzed with critical discourse analysis and discourse psychology. Conclusions that the study has resulted in is that some clients experience a worsening attitude, they want a personal and individual approach, and derives it to social services are in a vulnerable and stressful situation in today's society. Social workers talk about the contact with words like adapt, to listen and responsibility is important for a professional to create a successful contact and relationship. The results also showed that clients identify themselves at times with their diagnoses and occasionally they express a desire to disregard diagnoses. Some clients also expressed experiences of stigmatization because of their mental illness from social services. A social worker said she didn’t ask the client straight ahead about the diagnosis, instead she described herself as a detective in the conversation. (Less)
