Abstract
Spice can be seen as an herbal mixture that consists of synthetic cannabinoids, which are designed to provide a marijuana-like high. In Sweden and other countries there have been legal actions to ban the synthetic cannabinoids in Spice, but when a chemical becomes illegal the substances in Spice will be replaced with a new legal one. For that reason can Spice be seen as a drug placed in a so-called grey zone.

This paper aims to study how young adults aged 18 to 25 years who have tried or use Spice think about this drug. This paper will look at the social norms regarding Spice use and how the social norms among the young adults relate to the legal norms.

Qualitative method and an online survey have been used to collect the young adult’s thoughts about their experiences from using Spice. The theoretical frameworks for this paper are theories of norms and normmodellen by Håkan Hydén. The findings indicate that the adolescents tried Spice for the first time mainly due to their friends and the amounting peer pressure. The social norm among the young adults was to use Spice together with friends. When the adolescents had tried this drug and experienced the effects of Spice, they gained more knowledge about Spice, which resulted in that the social norms among the young adults did change. This is because of a greater knowledge of Spice’s negative side effects and the fear of informal sanctions such as, exclusion and bad reputation in the labour market, in which the adolescents chose to follow the norm of not using Spice. The results of this paper shows that the social norms regarding Spice usage among the young adults agree with the legal norms. (Less)
