- Abstract
- The aim of this study was to examine how school counselors in a middle-sized and a small municipality in southern Sweden experienced bullying as a phenomena and how they worked on preventing the problem. The study was based on semi-qualitative interviews with school counselors on schools with children from age 6-15 in a middle-sized and a small municipality in southern Sweden. In total we have interviewed 5 school counselors on different schools. It became clear that school counselors’ definition of the word bullying was inconsistent with the children’s definition. The school counselors refused to use the word “bullying” and preferred “degrading treatment” instead. Even in the Swedish legislation the word “bullying” was no longer used, they too had shifted to “degrading treatment”, this because there is no difference between the two concepts. Even though the legislation stated no difference between these two words, the school counselors used them differently. “Degrading treatment” was used as a milder form of “bullying”. This difference in severity could violate the children’s trust in the counselors and cause the children to be seen as non-ideal victims. Regarding the internal cooperation, both municipalities stated that it was successful and meaningful work. However, there was a noticeable difference in how the municipalities worked with external organizations. Some stated that it was successful, while others were disappointed in how the cooperation had developed. In the middle-sized municipality there was a great deal of successful cooperation with the social services, while in the small municipality the external cooperation consisted of working with the police and the open addiction treatment centre. Both municipalities stated that the cooperation with children and youth psychology centre was not working to satisfaction. (Less)
