The research points to the importance of narrative between history and future. This paper shows that the use of historical memory is fundamental in order to understand the striving for independence. The use of symbols and symbolic actions is also considered a manifest of the Catalan identity – the heavy use of the Catalan flag, La Senyera, is a great example hereof. This paper also touches upon the fact that many Catalans cherish and promote the use of the Catalan language.
