The purpose of the present study is to deepen the knowledge about the work and views of medical social workers working within rehabilitation care. Specifically, their work and views with regard to holistic rehabilitation is focused. The purpose of the present study is to deepen the knowledge about the work and views of medical social workers working within rehabilitation care. Specifically, their work and views with regard to holistic rehabilitation is focused. Holistic rehabilitation is in the present context defined as encompassing medical-, personal- and work-related aspects of the rehabilitation process.
A questionnaire was answered by 117 social workers (respond rate 52 %) working with rehabilitation care in three different parts of the health care system; primary health care, specialised health care in open offices and specialised hospital care. Overall the social workers express positive attitudes towards the concept of holistic rehabilitation. Their own interest as well as the demands of legalisation emerges as key factors in explaining their readiness to work with a holistic approach. Moreover, the social workers generally believe that other occupational groups have a favourable view of their work as such approach.
Lack of time appeared as the main obstacle regarding the possibility to work with a holistic approach. Thus, slightly more than half of the respondents consider lack of time to be the main obstacle to work holistically. Moreover, almost one third of the social workers state that both the organisation and the working place express a lack of interest in holistic rehabilitation. Taken together, this implies that the social workers in the study identify structural barriers regarding the possibility to work according to legislation. However, the social workers believe that holistic rehabilitation would be strengthened if they acquired an increased responsibility and a coordinating role in the rehabilitation process.
The empirical outcome of the study is discussed using concepts from Lewins field theory and Abbotts work about professionalization. Especially, it is discussed if the marginalised role of social workers in the medical sector could and should be renegotiated. (Less) - Popular Abstract
- A questionnaire was answered by medical social workers working with rehabilitation in health care. The study showed, among other things, that the medical social workers were positive to have the function of a holistic approach to rehabilitation and that such a function could clarify their own professional role in the medical field.
