Five students on the Social work education that studied on the seventh semester on Lund’s University were interviewed. In the ages 24-46, one male and five female. Three with earlier experience of social work, and two without.
The result showed that the students requested more practical elements during the education. The students felt that there was an unbalance regarding how the theoretical and practical was prioritized; the students felt that it was during their internships on the fifth semester that they learned the most about social work and started to find their own professional identity.
Furthermore our study showed that the students separated theoretical and practical learning as two individual ways of receiving knowledge. The literature that was analyzed showed that theoretical and practical knowledge need to coexist for the students to be able to receive correct knowledge. The link between these two is reflection.
By combining practical and theoretical knowledge the students get an opportunity to reflect on the knowledge they receive, and how to implement the knowledge in to social work on the way to finding their own professional identity. (Less)
