Abstract
This thesis is about the relationship between perceived risk and actual risk regarding bicycle infrastructure. The study examines cykelrondellen, the crossing Kaptensgatan–Kungsgatan in Malmö, Sweden. The crossing is seen by many as dangerous even though it is safe based on objective traffic safety numbers. A case study is made on the crossing from a technical viewpoint. The results from this study are further analyzed in a critical study, where the discrepancy between the objective traffic safety and the perceived traffic safety is put in a historical context. The conclusion is that the current view on traffic safety as a strictly quantitative delimited research area and the lack of consideration of perceived traffic safety as an... (More)
This thesis is about the relationship between perceived risk and actual risk regarding bicycle infrastructure. The conclusion is that the current view on traffic safety as a strictly quantitative delimited research area and the lack of consideration of perceived traffic safety as an important part of the competitiveness of a transportation mode lead to a marginalization of the needs and demands of bicycle traffic in physical planning. New analytical models are suggested to bypass the current limitations of traffic safety as a primary ground of judgement of a traffic solution. (Less)
