INCOME CHANGES AND DYNAMICS OF A HOUSING AFFORDABILITY GINI IN CANADA
(2015) NEKN01 20152Department of Economics
- Abstract
- This paper looks at changes in income, earnings and mortgage debt across Canada between 1976-2010. It looks at how changes in income, wealth and mortgage debt have affected groups of ‘younger Canadians’ and compares that group to ‘older Canadians’. Further looking at housing inequality during the period, it uses 238,608 observations across two Canadian national household surveys to provide an estimate for a derived Gini measure of ‘housing affordability’. Using this measure it finds rising inequality in both net income and ‘housing affordability’.
