- Abstract
- The aim of this study was to describe and analyze the criminal gang members' experiences of the exit process. What we mean by the exit process is the way in and out of gang crime and the maintenance of the new role of non- criminal gangs.We have, through qualitative semi-structured interviews interviewed former criminal gang members and analyzed their experiences using Ebaughs (1988) theory about role exit, and Goffman's (2011) theory of stigma. The most important result we reached showed that the risk factors for getting into gang crime could be dysfunctional upbringing as violence and/or abuse in the home, lack of parental ability and lack of friendship and great difficulty in school.
